“Citizen of the Year” Dr. Paul Abend

Dr. Paul Abend started a sports program in soccer, baseball and basketball specifically for students with special needs including autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD and seizure disorders for ages 6-13. This program began in Mt. Horeb School in Warren and has grown over the years throughout New Jersey. Dr Abend also speaks at sports clinics on integrating students with special needs into sports programs and how to handle these children. He developed and implemented a training model for residents out of Robert Wood Johnson UMDMJ medical program, initiated a program for medical residents to observe and meet with staff at DLC on managing the behaviors of students on the Autism Spectrum, initiated a non-profit organization on transporting students on the Autism Spectrum so that families can get their children to such places at Disneyland, including free private jet charters, limo service and accommodations for the children and his/her family with the sport of a behavior specialist and meals provided by TGIF and finally started the first inter-town basketball game which was held this past December.

“Volunteer of the Year” Heather Trumpore

Heather Trumpore is a mother of three and in her spare time she volunteers for the Recreation, Boys and Girls Scouts, YMCA, Warren A.L.T. School, Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church and the Boys and Girls Lacrosse program. She is an instructor of CPR, First Aid, swimming; a Unit Manager, Scout Leader for boys and girls, pre school enrichment leader, program designer, data entry person and volunteers on several boards for Lacrosse. She is the glue that holds us all together.

One observer put it this way, “Heather steps up, steps in, fills in, finds out, works out, pushes, pulls, moves mountains, and photographs. There isn’t anything she wouldn’t do to get something done and if no one else will do it, she will. She doesn’t know the meaning of the word “no”. With Heather anything is possible. I don’t think she sleeps.”
