On December 11, 2001, a committee of Warren Township residents met to plan a memorial to honor township men and women who had served in the military during wartime, beginning with the Revolutionary War. Chairman of the committee was former mayor Kenneth J. Brenn. Committee members John D. Farrell and Alan A. Siegel were charged with the task of compiling a list of veterans whose names would be inscribed on the proposed monument. Any honorably discharged veteran who lived in Warren Township before, during or after his or her military service was eligible. Twentieth century military service was defined by using State of New Jersey guidelines, as follows: World War I, April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918; World War II, September 16, 1940 to December 31, 1946; Korean War, June 23, 1950 to January 31, 1955; and Vietnam War, December 31, 1960 to May 7, 1975. For service in Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Somalia and the Persian Gulf/Desert Storm, see NJSC, 4A:5-1.1. Other committee members were: William I.Apgar, Frank R. Freehauf and Victor J. Sordillo, another former mayor. [Last Revised October 1, 2003] NOTE: Until 1872 North Plainfield, Watchung and Green Brook were part of Warren Township. Some of the soldiers listed up to and including the Civil War were residents of those areas. REVOLUTIONARY WAR 1775-1783 Allen, David, private, Capt. Winans (1818-1853), both buried in Springdale Cemetery, were listed by the Somerset County Memorial Committee of the American Legion as veterans of the Mexican War. Despite extensive research, there is no substantiation of this claim. William Smith (1811-1900), another alleged Mexican War veteran buried in Mt. Horeb Cemetery, did not live in Warren Township. No proof of his service has been located. Joseph J. DeVoto did not serve in the 45th Pennsylvania Volunteers according to the standard references. He may have served in another unit. The Somerset County Memorial Committee lists Dennis S. H. Tunison (1866-1936), buried in Mt. Horeb Cemetery, as a veteran of the Spanish American War. His obituary published 4/17/1936 in the Bound Brook Chronicle is silent as to any war service. No substantiation of his service has been located. Civil War deserters are listed in this publication but are not on the monument. War dates on the monument are historical dates. Qualifying dates to be listed on the monument are as set forth in the introduction. © Warren Township Historical Society |
