1799 PETITION PROVIDES SUBSTITUTE CENSUS

[From Warren History, Vol. Four, No. 5, Spring 2006]

Because New Jersey returns from the 1790-1820 Federal censuses are missing, the earliest such records available to historians are dated 1830 (see Warren History, Vol. III, No. 1). The January 9, 1799, petition to the State Legislature by “Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Easterly parts of the Townships of Bernard and Bridgewater” calling for a new township contains 109 signatures, a virtual census in itself. While all of the signers may not have lived in what was to become Warren, and some who lived in what would become Warren did not sign, most of the signers probably lived in what became Warren Township in 1806. Here are the names:

Fred’k VerMeule, John VerMeule, Cornelius VerMeule, Cornelius VerMeule Jun., Edward Vail, John Bulman, Abraham Vail, James Vail, John Vail, Edward F. Randolph, John Hedgar, Jonathan Ruckman, Benjamin Nicols, Thomas Auton, Isaac Vail, Joseph Thorn, George Sebring, Levi Toils, William Prine, David Van Court, Joseph Howel, Daniel Vail, Daniel Layce, David Boice, Enos Runyan, Jeremiah Drake, David Smalley “sadler,” Joseph Tingley, Jacob Tingley, Francis Dunn, Samuel Pope, John Tingley, Ruben Dunn, Joseph Tingley Jun., Aron Cosad, Joseph Moor, David Price, William Winans, Philip Winans, James Harris, John Winans, Wynant Winans, Michael Lawler, John Cory, Thomas Terrell, John Wilson, Daniel Wood, Isaac Smalley, Jacob Smalley, Benjamin Smalley, John Stevens, Alex Kirkpatrick, Jonathan Willet, Thomas Willet, Richard Pangborn Sr., Samuel Pangman, Richard Pangman Jn., Jonathan Dunn, Israel Coon Sr., Samuel Cosade, David Steward, Isaac Forken, Moses Coon, Benjamin Jennings, Richard Drake, John Booth, Daniel Mor, David Allen, Peter Allen, David French, Benjamin French, David Smalley, Daniel Smalley, Enoch Moor, Ezekial Decamp, Peter Vail, Joseph Allen, Jacob Allen, Parkis Cory, David Miller, Nathan Ruckman, Nathaniel Traynor, Simeon Rogers, John Smalley, James Smalley, William Little, Jacob Bery, Ralf Hand, Samuel Vail, Isaac Vail, Daniel Thompson, David Vail, Amos Vail, Andrew Cadmus, Richard Cadmus, Ezra Wooden, William Coles, Abraham Thorn, Henry Line, Dennis Coles, Samuel Shotwell, Jonathan Drake, Isaac Manning, James Manning, Hugh Thorn, Isaac Manning Jr., John Manning, Elbert Dumont and Dugal Ayres.
