How to make donations for Hurricane Katrina Victims

A message from Mayor Gary P. DiNardo

The residents of the Gulf Coast, New Orleans, Mississippi, were dramatically affected by the impacts of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. All of us want to do our part to assist in the recovery. I am sure that if each and every one of you could, you would volunteer your time to assist the residents. The residents of Warren Township are caring people, as was shown by your reaction to the Bound Brook flood and September 11, 2001.

Although many of you may have contributed to such organizations as The American Red Cross, Salvation Army, and religious organizations, if you have not already done so, contributions can be made to any of the following or the charity of your choice:

The American Red Cross: 1-800-HELP-NOW or www.redcross.org
Or mail your contribution to: The American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, DC 20013

Salvation Army: 1-800-SAL-ARMY or www.salvationarmyusa.org

The recovery period for this tragedy will be long and painful. Our prayers and thoughts are with the victims of Hurricane Katrina and their families, as well as those who survived, and all those who are helping with rescue and recovery efforts.

I encourage all Warren residents to assist the residents of the Gulf Coast in their trying time.

There aren't any stores functioning in or near Waveland, so gift cards will not work at this time. This may be a good idea for later when the Wal-Mart in town opens up but there is no timeline on that.

Our team will be leaving Saturday morning and will have two trucks, one pulling a donated 19' camping trailer which we will leave there and the other pulling a 20' enclosed trailer.

Updated list of what is needed:

We need to know by Thursday morning (the sooner the better) what a congregation or group is willing to commit to providing so we can plan space on the trucks. Please provide a contact name and number for each group so we can arrange delivery or pickup on Friday or early Saturday - please do NOT have people drop off misc. supplies at Alliance Bible Church.

Email is probably the easiest way to contact me: JHeinaman@AllianceBibleChurch.com

- We prefer to have everything in case or larger quantities to make packing, transport and unloading easier. Perhaps families or congregations can pool their financial resources to purchase in larger quantities from Costco or BJs?
  • New T-shirts
  • New packaged underwear
  • Cereal
  • Juices
  • Powdered milk
  • Canned goods (ready to eat from can)
  • Brooms, mops, detergent
  • First aid supplies including:
    • Bandages
    • Peroxide
    • Peptol Bismol
    • Antibiotic crème.
  • Used baby furniture including: cribs, high chairs, car seats
  • Tents, sleeping bags (we will approach Efingers in Bound Brook to see if they'd be willing donate towards the cause).
For anyone who is interested, here is an inside look at conditions in Waveland from a member of the Vineland Alliance Church who is in Waveland, MS this week.

The ground is very dirty, oily, but, there are not a lot of bugs. It is hot 90-100. There are no stores open, not even Wal-Mart. There is no where to spend money. Volunteers are staying in a large tent in the Kmart parking lot.

Volunteers are sleeping in a 100 person tent and it is air-conditioned and quite cool. Each person has a cot.

The work is very organized and defined.

1. Unloading trucks into the air conditioned tent for people to come and "shop"
2. Distributing things and helping people as they "shop" in the tent
3. Equipment maintenance and repair
4. Cooking/serving/clean-up This has the longest day 5:30AM-7PM and they are trying to break this up into two teams.
