REQUIREMENTS FOR A MARRIAGE/ CIVIL UNION LICENSE

 

§         Proof of Residency (such as driver’s license or two pieces of significant mail). Application must be taken in the town in which Partner A or Partner B resides.  For out of state applicants, application must be made in the town where the ceremony is to occur.

 

An appointment must be made by calling the Registrar in the Health Department at 908-753-8000, Ext. 239.

 

§         Identification – Birth certificate or passport.

 

§         Social Security cards for both – if social security card(s) not available, anything with social security number is sufficient i.e. payroll stub, tax return.  If you do not have a social security number, we can still process your application.

 

§         Mother’s maiden name, place of birth, Father’s name, place of birth (for both bride and groom).

 

§         Officiant’s name, address, phone number.

 

§         Fee for the application is $28.00. ($25.00 of this fee goes to the Division of Youth and Family Services for spousal abuse programs.)  Please bring exact cash or a personal check.

 

§         One witness is required for the marriage license application. Witness must be 18 years of age or older, know both the prospective bride and groom, and must speak English.  Witness may be asked for proof of age.

 

§         If either or both partners have been married/ in a domestic partnership/ or civil union before, and are now divorced or widowed, we need a copy of the final divorce decree, termination of domestic partnership, termination of civil union or a death certificate.

 

§         Blood tests are no longer required in the State of New Jersey.

 

§         There is a 3-day waiting period for the marriage license.  If you are getting married by the Mayor of Warren, you must first make an appointment by calling 908-753-8000 extension 221, or you can go directly to the Township Clerk’s office on the first floor of the Municipal Building.  If any other Officiant is performing the ceremony, he/she must be contacted directly by the bride/groom.

 

IF EITHER OR BOTH PARTNERS ARE MINORS

 

§         If Partner A and/or Partner B are under the age of 18, both parents must come in along with two (2) other witnesses for the application.

 

§         If Partner A and/or Partner B are under the age of 16, the above applies and you must get approval from a Judge at the Somerset County Court House in Somerville NJ.
